How to remove a watermark from a video or photo

VidMints Team·Jul 2026·6 min read

Watermark removal is one of the most searched editing tasks — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's how it works, and just as importantly, when you should and shouldn't use it.

Use it on content you own

The legitimate cases are clear: removing your own outdated logo, cleaning a stock asset you've licensed for modification, or clearing a placeholder mark from footage you created. Removing a watermark to pass off someone else's work as your own is copyright infringement — don't.

How AI removal works

Modern removal isn't 'erasing' — it's inpainting. You mark the region covering the watermark, and an AI model reconstructs what was plausibly behind it using the surrounding pixels. On simple, uniform backgrounds the result can be seamless; over busy detail or a face, the reconstruction is an educated guess.

Getting the cleanest result

Mask tightly around the mark, not loosely — the smaller the region the AI has to invent, the better. Semi-transparent watermarks over flat areas (sky, walls, solid colour) clear best. For video, results are strongest when the background behind the mark is relatively stable across frames.

The honest limits

No tool perfectly rebuilds detail that was never captured. Expect the best results on flat backgrounds and the weakest over intricate texture. In VidMints, the watermark remover and AI object remover both run this inpainting workflow in the browser — try it on a copy first so you keep the original.
